Sauris, known as Zahre in the local dialect, the buildings usually develop on two floors, the lower one in stone, a basement, and the upper one in wood, made with the blockbau technique (wooden trunks overlapped and fitted at the corners). The roof is covered in wooden shingles. In Sauris, alongside Italian and Friulian, an ancient and fascinating language is still spoken, a German dialect belonging to the southern Bavarian linguistic group.
